Trump Disqualified as Candidate in Maine Following Colorado
Charges of Leading 2021 Capitol Riot Applied
Trump Side Immediately Reacts
Following Colorado, the state of Maine has also decided to disqualify former U.S. President Donald Trump from running in the 2024 presidential election.
According to CNN on the 28th (local time), Maine's top election official, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, announced in a written decision that former President Trump is ineligible to run due to his role in leading the 2021 Capitol riot.
In the 34-page decision, Secretary Bellows stated, "I am aware that no Secretary of State has ever denied a presidential candidate access to the ballot based on Section 3 of the 14th Amendment," adding, "However, it is important to note that no presidential candidate in the past has ever engaged in insurrection."
Maine’s disqualification of former President Trump from holding public office is the second such decision following the Colorado Supreme Court. On the 19th, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that former President Trump must be removed from the presidential primary ballot.
Like Maine, the Colorado Supreme Court cited Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. Regarding the Capitol riot incited by Trump supporters, the court effectively found that former President Trump participated in an insurrection. The law prohibits public officials from assuming office if they have engaged in rebellion.
However, Colorado has allowed Trump’s name to remain on the ballot for now. The Colorado Secretary of State’s office stated that unless the Colorado Supreme Court dismisses the case or issues a different ruling, he will be included on the 2024 presidential primary ballot.
