"Beware of Interfloor Noise" Interfloor Noise Alert 'D-Silence' Applied for the First Time
Install Sensors on Living Room and Pantry Walls
Notify via Wallpad When Vibration Exceeds Threshold
Clear Guidelines to Reach Agreement on Interfloor Noise
A service that measures and notifies residents of inter-floor noise generated inside the home has emerged to prevent apartment floor noise.
DL E&C announced on the 28th that it applied the inter-floor noise prevention service 'D-Silence' at e-Pyeonhansesang Yeoncheon Wellsheim in Yeoncheon-gun, Gyeonggi Province. D-Silence is the first inter-floor noise alert service developed in Korea.
D-Silence automatically sends alerts to the wall pad when vibrations above a certain level are detected through sensors installed on the living room and pantry walls of apartment units. If floor vibrations generating noise above the Ministry of Environment's inter-floor noise standard for apartments (39 dB) occur three or more times within 10 seconds, a 'Caution' alert sounds; if six or more times within 10 seconds, a 'Warning' alert sounds.
Since 2019, DL E&C has been collaborating with experts in structure, acoustics, and IT to research sensors for collecting inter-floor noise data and devised an embedded wall vibration sensor capable of measuring floor vibrations.
D-Silence helps alleviate inter-floor noise stress not only for the downstairs neighbors but also for the upstairs neighbors. It allows residents to recognize that the noise is below the legal standard and informs them of the noise level, reducing concerns about noise. Although the perception that inter-floor noise originates from the upstairs unit is dominant, many residents have suffered complaints from downstairs neighbors even when no noise was generated from their own homes.
The D-Silence service allows adjustment of sensor sensitivity. By reflecting the residential characteristics of both upstairs and downstairs units and establishing mutually agreed standards in the system, conflicts can be prevented. In a survey conducted by DL E&C targeting residents of the complex, 78% of respondents gave positive feedback, and 84% of residents with children under their teens evaluated it positively. After applying the service, residents became more aware of the level of inter-floor noise and showed increased caution.
Professor Sanghyun Lee of Dankook University explained, "The D-Silence service is a technology developed through an innovative shift in perspective, moving away from existing inter-floor noise research focused solely on apartment floors. Based on accumulated data, it provides a foundation for upstairs and downstairs neighbors to agree on resolving inter-floor noise issues, while also offering clues to solve the concerns of upstairs neighbors who suffered from inter-floor noise stress due to the lack of objective standards."

DL E&C has been dedicated to developing technologies related to inter-floor noise. They developed the 'D-Silent Floor,' a floor structure technology with a five-stage sound insulation system. It achieves noise blocking performance similar to the low-noise operation mode of home air conditioners. It will be commercialized for the first time domestically at e-Pyeonhansesang Geomdan Well County.
