Gwangju Dong-gu, Erects Monument Inscribed with the Spirit of General Gokyeongmyeong
Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 22nd that it has installed a Jeibong-ro marker stone at the Namgwangju Intersection subway exit. The road is named after General Jeibong (霽峯) Go Gyeong-myeong (1533?1592), a militia leader who devoted his life to loyalty to the nation and saving the country.
Jeibong-ro is a boulevard with a total length of 3,230 meters and a width of 25 to 30 meters, consisting of 2, 4, and 6 lanes. It was established as a main road connecting Hak-dong in Dong-gu heading north through Chungjang-ro 1-ga and 2-ga, Geumnam-ro 1-ga and 2-ga, and Daein-dong, reaching Jungheung-dong in Buk-gu.
In particular, this road passes through the old downtown area and is known for having many historical sites related to the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement, such as Chonnam National University Hospital, the former Jeonnam Provincial Office, Namdong Catholic Church, the former Gwangju MBC, and Jeonnam Girls' High School.
Go Yun-geun, chairman of the Go family Gwangju-Jeonnam clan association, said, "The establishment of the marker stone containing the spirit of militia leader Go Gyeong-myeong is especially meaningful," and added, "I hope the Jeibong spirit will be preserved for a long time."
