Putin Opponent Navalny Sent to Siberian Prison... "Managed Ahead of Russian Presidential Election"
Confirmed Well-being After 3 Weeks Since Last Visit
Alexei Navalny, the Russian opposition leader often called the rival of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has reportedly been transferred to a prison in the northernmost Siberian region of Russia. With the Russian presidential election scheduled for March next year, public interest in Navalny's imprisonment has increased, and Russian authorities are believed to be grappling with the issue.
According to AFP on the 25th (local time), Navalny's spokesperson Kira Yarmysh stated on X (formerly Twitter), "Navalny has been found. He is currently imprisoned at IK-3 in Kharp, Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug," adding, "His lawyer visited him today, and he is doing well."
This is the first confirmation of Navalny's whereabouts in nearly three weeks since Yarmysh last visited him on the 6th. Previously, Navalny was held at the Melikhovo No. 6 prison about 235 km east of Moscow, but his sudden disappearance sparked various suspicions about his safety both inside and outside Russia.
Navalny had previously filed a lawsuit against the prison, claiming his rights were being violated during his incarceration, and had been attending court hearings online. However, after missing online court sessions on the 7th and 11th and being denied visits from his lawyers, his whereabouts became unknown, raising concerns about his safety among his supporters and the international community, including the United States.
Ivan Zhdanov, Navalny's colleague and head of the Anti-Corruption Foundation, asserted, "From the beginning, the Russian authorities wanted to isolate him, especially ahead of the election." The Russian presidential election date was confirmed as March 17 next year, and President Putin officially declared his candidacy on the 8th. Since then, as many as 16 candidates have entered the race, and the Russian political scene is already engulfed in election fever.
The U.S. State Department welcomed the confirmation of Navalny's whereabouts and urged Russia to stop suppressing dissidents. In a statement issued by a spokesperson, the State Department said, "We remain deeply concerned about Navalny's well-being and his unjust detention. The Russian government must release Navalny unconditionally and immediately," emphasizing, "We call on the Russian government to cease escalating repression against independent voices."
