HD Hyundai Marine Solutions announced on the 25th that the 'Methanol Dual-Fuel Propulsion Conversion Design,' carried out recently in the form of a Joint Development Project (JDP) with Korean Register (KR), HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, and HD Hyundai E&T, has obtained basic certification (AIP) from Korean Register.
This project targeted a 16,000 TEU (20-foot equivalent unit) ultra-large container carrier operated by HMM, the largest container shipping company in Korea. HD Hyundai Marine Solutions was responsible for the overall system configuration and basic design work, overseeing the entire project.
HD Hyundai E&T performed 3D modeling and detailed design, while HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering handled the design and engineering of the newly developed Low Flashpoint Fuel Supply System (LFSS). Additionally, the methanol dual-fuel large engines produced by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, along with the independently developed methanol power engines and methanol tank technology, were applied to the system design.
Methanol is gaining attention as a next-generation eco-friendly fuel because it can significantly reduce emissions of pollutants such as sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and greenhouse gases compared to conventional marine fuels, and it can be stored and transported on ships without additional equipment. Accordingly, around 200 methanol-powered vessels are being ordered or converted, mainly by global major shipping companies such as Maersk, CMA-CGM, and HMM.
