This study is significant in that it systematically explains the distribution of auxiliary verbs in African American English within the minimalist framework, which is based on universal grammar as its fundamental ideology. Furthermore, by revealing that African American English holds an equal linguistic status to mainstream English, it is expected to contribute to changing social perceptions of African Americans.
