Smart shelters where residents can wait for buses while avoiding cold waves, heatwaves, and fine dust are opening one after another in Jung-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Kim Gil-seong), warmly welcoming the residents.
To commemorate the installation of the smart shelters, Jung-gu held a ceremony on the 21st at the bus stop in front of Exit 7 of Yaksu Station, where the district's first smart shelter was installed, inviting about 100 residents. The residents experienced the various functions provided by the smart shelter and welcomed the birth of this 'amazing space,' saying, "Now we can wait for the bus without shivering even on cold days."
A 'smart shelter' refers to a transportation convenience facility installed around bus stops, providing residents with a safe and comfortable place to rest while also offering useful information for daily life. Including Yaksu-dong, which opened on this day, a total of seven locations will open by the end of this month. Once 13 locations are completed by February next year, a total of 20 smart shelters will be available in Jung-gu.
The Jung-gu style smart shelters utilize advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to provide various conveniences.
▲ Transportation information and communication services (public transportation information and bus approach information, public Wi-Fi, wireless phone charging) ▲ A safe and comfortable space to rest in all four seasons (air purification and heating/cooling facilities) ▲ District administration promotion (Jung-gu TV, kiosks) ▲ Emergency shelters (intelligent CCTV detecting hazards, security and remote monitoring systems, automated external defibrillators) and other diverse functions are equipped.

The budget required for the installation and operation of the smart shelters was introduced through a private investment (BTO) method. The project operator manufactures and installs the facilities, donates them to the district, and then maintains them for five years while holding the advertising operation rights. Through this, Jung-gu saved about 4.7 billion KRW in budget.
Kim Gil-seong, Mayor of Jung-gu, said, “Waiting for the bus during cold waves can become a pleasure at the Jung-gu style smart shelters,” and added, “We hope residents actively use this ‘amazing’ space where you can warm your frozen body and also obtain useful information.”
