A man who kidnapped an elementary school student to extort money has been arrested.
On the 21st, the Dobong Police Station in Seoul announced that they had obtained an arrest warrant for a man in his 40s, identified as A, on charges of violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (abduction of a child under 13). The court explained that the warrant was issued due to concerns over evidence tampering and flight risk.
A is accused of kidnapping an elementary school student on the morning of the 19th at an apartment in Dobong-gu, Seoul, while the student was on the way to school, and then threatening the parents to demand 200 million won in cash.
At the time, the victim managed to escape by cutting the tape an hour after the abduction when A left the place, and sought help from the police. After receiving the report, the police tracked A down and arrested him at around 5:15 p.m. the same day.
