If the Tee Shot Ball Rolls Under the Memorial Tree...
No Relief Without Local Rule, No Penalty
Driver Removed, Drop Within 2 Clubs
Commemorative Plaque Allows 'No Penalty Play'
There are various ‘hazards’ on the field. These include Out of Bounds (OB), hazards, and immovable obstructions. Among them, a memorial tree is ambiguous. These are trees planted throughout the course after recording achievements like hole-in-ones, albatrosses, and shot eagles.
Generally, commemorative numbers are not subject to penalty relief.

What happens if a tee shot lands under a memorial tree? Players wonder if they can receive free relief. They request free relief thinking “the memorial tree is not part of the course design.” To get straight to the point, free relief is not allowed.
Certain trees can be designated as no-play zones by local rules for protection. This generally applies to young, growing trees. If the tournament committee of the golf course has not designated the memorial tree as a no-play zone, free relief cannot be granted. However, free relief is possible at the memorial plaque. This location is considered both an immovable obstruction and an abnormal course condition.
Golf is the only sport without referees. It is famous as a gentleman’s sport where players impose penalties on themselves even when no one is watching. The fundamental principle of golf is to “play the ball as it lies.” Shots are made even from poor lies. It is not easy to escape when the ball is inside a memorial tree. There is a way: accept a one-stroke penalty and confidently take relief.

Take out the longest club, the driver, and identify the drop location within two club lengths. Check if there are any movable obstructions, called loose impediments, where the ball will drop. Remove stones, leaves, twigs, pine cones, and other debris. Drop the ball from knee height. When removing obstacles around the ball that interfere with the shot, be careful not to move the ball. Confidently aim for the green and escape the predicament.
