According to the National Police Agency on the 19th, Jin Haeseong, a police sergeant working at the Chopyeong Police Substation of Jincheon Police Station in Chungbuk, went to the ATM at 10 a.m. on August 1 after finishing his shift and noticed an elderly man talking on the phone in front of the machine.
Bank CCTV footage showed the elderly man holding a cellphone and opening his bankbook to attempt a transfer. Sergeant Jin, overhearing the conversation, sensed it was a voice phishing scam and warned the elderly man, saying, "This seems like a dangerous call." However, the elderly man insisted that the person on the phone was a police officer and that he needed to send the money.
The elderly man whispered, "They said my bankbook is involved in a crime and if I send the money, they will protect me." Convinced it was a crime, Sergeant Jin tried to stop him by even taking the bankbook, but the elderly man did not listen. Instead, he went inside the bank to withdraw the money.
Officer Jin followed the elderly person into the bank and informed the teller that "the elderly person is being targeted by voice phishing." In response, the bank staff immediately delayed the withdrawal and reported the incident to the police.
