Dongducheon~Yeoncheon Subway Line Opens on the 16th... Expectation for Improved Metropolitan Transportation in Northern Gyeonggi
The Gyeongwon Line subway connecting Dongducheon and Yeoncheon in Gyeonggi Province will open on the 16th.
The Gyeongwon Line (Dongducheon~Yeoncheon) electrification project extends the Seoul Metropolitan Subway Line 1, which currently operates up to Soyosan, by a total of 20.8 km to Yeoncheon. The total project cost was 555.5 billion KRW, and it is opening nine years after groundbreaking in 2014.
The newly opened section was promoted as a single-track electrification with double-track preparation to prepare for continental railway connections such as Sintan-ri~Cheorwon (Baengmagoji), the inter-Korean railway, and the Trans-Siberian Railway.
With the completion of the Gyeongwon Line electrification project, travel time from Yeoncheon to Dongducheon will be reduced from 30 minutes to 16 minutes, and it will be possible to travel to Seoul Yongsan in about 1 hour and 40 minutes.
