The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 13th that it is promoting a project to apply AI technology to administrative tasks in order to provide citizens with more detailed and high-quality administrative and welfare services.

To advance the project, the Ministry signed memorandums of understanding (MOUs) in June this year with domestic companies such as Naver, KT, LG, and SKT, and later Minds & Company, Vibe Company, Saltlux, and Konan Technology also joined.

Each company utilized the Ministry’s data and their own technological capabilities to identify administrative areas suitable for AI application, resulting in the development of AI administrative support services that assist with simple and repetitive administrative tasks such as document creation and information retrieval.

Specifically, LG and Konan Technology developed services where AI drafts documents such as press releases and speeches. In services developed by SKT and Saltlux, AI searches for information and provides answers based on laws, guidelines, and other references.

Currently, before fully introducing AI into administration, the effectiveness and feasibility of the technology are being verified in advance. Based on the results demonstrated this year, the Ministry plans to pilot AI administrative services targeting central government ministries and some local government officials starting in 2024. Additionally, the plan is to incorporate this into next year’s Information Strategy Plan (ISP) and ultimately establish a government-wide AI common infrastructure platform.

In this regard, on the 14th, the Ministry will hold the 25th Work Smart Forum at the Government Sejong Complex under the theme “AI, Opening New Possibilities for Work,” where it will announce the results of cooperation with private companies. Private companies such as Google, LG, SKT, and Saltlux will participate in the forum to share various cases related to work innovation with attendees.

Minister Lee Sang-min stated, “We will continue to actively utilize digital technologies such as AI and cloud computing to build a government that works efficiently.”
