Government to Begin Full-Scale Nuclear Plant Decommissioning Next Year Starting with Gori Unit 1
Ministry of Industry Discusses Measures to Strengthen Competitiveness of Domestic Nuclear Power Plant Decommissioning Industry
The government announced on the 8th that it will begin full-scale decommissioning of nuclear power plants starting with Kori Unit 1 next year.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held the 'Global Competitiveness Enhancement Council for Nuclear Power Plant Decommissioning' and the '2023 Nuclear Power Plant Decommissioning Business Forum' consecutively on the 8th to discuss measures to strengthen the global competitiveness of domestic companies in nuclear power plant decommissioning.
The council included 18 participants such as Lee Ho-hyun, Director General of the Energy Policy Office at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, local government officials, and experts from industry, academia, and research institutes. At this meeting, they focused on reviewing the role of the Korea Atomic Energy Environment Restoration Institute, which began construction in October 2022 and is currently under construction, as well as the progress and future plans of research and development (R&D) projects related to nuclear power plant decommissioning.
At the Nuclear Power Plant Decommissioning Business Forum, over 200 experts participated to discuss the theme of 'Advancing the Nuclear Power Plant Decommissioning Industry and Securing Global Competitiveness,' covering topics such as the current status and outlook of the decommissioning industry, technology development for decommissioning, and successful experiences and lessons learned from nuclear power plant decommissioning.

Director Lee stated, "Nuclear power generation is the optimal energy source to respond to energy security and the climate crisis, and the government is concentrating all policy efforts to normalize the nuclear power ecosystem. Successful decommissioning of nuclear power plants is meaningful as it completes the entire lifecycle ecosystem of the nuclear industry. Therefore, starting next year, we will begin full-scale decommissioning of Kori Unit 1, providing domestic companies with opportunities to gain experience and build a track record in nuclear power plant decommissioning."
