Film Archive Special Screening of Director Ham Myung-jung's 'Tae'
Director Ham Myung-jung, Cinematographer Jeong Il-seong, and Audience GV
The Korean Film Archive recently announced on the 7th that the remastered film 'Tae (1986)' will be specially screened at Megabox COEX on the 11th. After the screening, director Ha Myung-jung, cinematographer Jeong Il-seong, music director Kim Young-dong, and actor Ma Heung-sik will take the stage to engage in a conversation with the audience.
'Tae' is the third directorial work of Ha Myung-jung, the younger brother of the late director Ha Gil-jong. Set on an isolated island, it depicts the resilient vitality and resistance of common people against power, criticizing the Chun Doo-hwan regime. At the time, government pressure restricted its screening, preventing it from gaining recognition.

The Film Archive recently restored the film through digital remastering in 4K resolution and held a commemorative screening last month. Director Park Chan-wook, who attended the event, praised it as "a work that will rewrite the history of Korean cinema in the 1980s." Cinematographer Jeong Il-seong, who captured the actors' performances over 60 days on a small island in Jeolla Province, recalled, "The set was more challenging than during the Korean War." He added, "Actors and staff trapped on the remote island took 24 lectures about filmmaking to build teamwork."
