'Subway Line 2 Stabbing Incident' 50-Year-Old Man Sentenced to 2 Years in Prison
A man in his 50s who injured passengers by wielding a weapon on the subway was sentenced to prison.
On the 7th, Judge Jeong Cheol-min of the Criminal Division 7 at the Seoul Western District Court sentenced Hong Mo (51), who was indicted on charges of special assault, to two years in prison. The court stated, "The nature of the crime is serious as it poses a threat to the safety of an unspecified number of innocent citizens."
Hong was indicted for swinging a multipurpose camping tool with a blade inside a train heading from Ewha Womans University Station to Sinchon Station on Seoul Subway Line 2 on August 19, injuring two passengers' faces.

Hong had been diagnosed with schizophrenia in the past but was confirmed to have stopped treatment since 2019. The court said it considered factors such as the crime appearing to be caused by delusions related to schizophrenia and the injuries to the victims not being severe when determining the sentence.
