MBTI 'E' Type Associated with Lower Risk of Dementia
Experiment on Personality Traits of 45,000 Adults
Extroverted and Positive People Have Lower Risk of Dementia
A study has found that people with extroverted and positive personalities have a relatively lower risk of developing dementia compared to those with opposite traits.
According to a report by a medical news outlet on the 3rd (local time), research teams from the University of California and Northwestern University confirmed that behaviors stemming from personality traits are associated with the risk of dementia.
The study was conducted by categorizing the personality traits of 44,531 adults aged between 49 and 81 into five criteria. Among the participants, 1,703 were diagnosed with dementia.
The personality traits examined in detail included conscientiousness, extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, and neuroticism. Additionally, participants' positive and negative emotions and life satisfaction were evaluated and compared with clinical symptoms of dementia.
As a result, individuals with strong negative personality traits such as instability and weak positive traits like conscientiousness and extraversion showed higher rates of dementia diagnosis.
Conversely, those with high levels of openness, agreeableness, and life satisfaction had lower rates of dementia diagnosis.
The research team also analyzed whether other variables such as age, gender, and education level influenced the relationship between personality and dementia, but found no effect except that conscientiousness tends to increase with age.
Based on the experimental results, the research team explained that behaviors related to personality appear to affect dementia. For example, conscientious people are more likely to eat well and take care of their health, thereby maintaining good health in the long term.
