Yongin City Promotes Construction of Complex Cultural Center on School Site in Seongbok-dong
21 Years of Neglect Due to Cancellation of Elementary School Establishment Plan by Education Office
On the 30th, Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province announced plans to conduct a feasibility study for the construction of a complex cultural center on the former school site in Seongbok-dong 177, Suji-gu.
This site is a 10,627㎡ plot of land near the LG Village 2nd Apartment complex in Seongbok-dong. It was designated as an elementary school site under urban planning facilities in 2003, but after the Office of Education canceled the school establishment plan in 2012, the land remained unused without a new purpose.
Earlier this year, the city changed the urban planning designation of this site, which had remained an empty lot in the city center for 21 years, to public office and cultural facility use. This was due to the possibility of administrative district reorganization following population growth in the Seongbok-dong area and the increasing need for a complex cultural facility.
The city plans to build a four-story complex cultural center equipped with a performance hall and exhibition spaces on this site. Based on the results of the feasibility study, the city will proceed with related administrative procedures such as the central investment review by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. To this end, the city has allocated 150 million KRW for the feasibility study service fee in next year’s main budget proposal, which has been submitted to the city council.
