While Wi-Fi installation has become common in urban public transportation, residents and tourists have experienced inconvenience due to the lack of such services on passenger ferries, which are the main mode of transportation in island areas.
With the free Wi-Fi service starting next year, users will be able to freely access the internet even on the sea, and the burden of data costs is expected to decrease.
Free Wi-Fi will first be installed on nine passenger ferries operating to major tourist destinations within Shinan-gun, including Byeongpungdo, Jaeun, Bigeum, and Dochodo, with plans to expand the service coverage further in the future.
A county official stated, “We expect that the installation of free Wi-Fi will resolve inconveniences for residents and tourists and further activate island tourism.”
