This event, held for the first time this year, took place on the 28th at Samsung Biologics' headquarters in Songdo, Incheon. About 100 executives and ESG officers from 26 major global suppliers, including Merck, Cytiva, Thermo Fisher, and Sartorius, attended the event.
Samsung Biologics conducted programs to enhance ESG understanding for attendees, including ▲introductions to ESG regulatory trends and sustainable management strategies ▲selection and sharing of best practices from outstanding ESG suppliers.
First, they invited Sangwon Moon, an ESG consulting expert and Managing Director at Samjong KPMG, to give a special lecture titled "ESG Regulatory Trends and Supply Chain Response Directions." The lecture covered the current status of global ESG regulations and policies, as well as the importance of ESG management.
An introduction to the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI), for which Samsung Biologics serves as the chair in the supply chain sector, was also provided. SMI is a global climate change response organization launched in 2020 under the patronage of King Charles III of the United Kingdom. In July, Samsung Biologics, together with six global pharmaceutical companies participating in the Health Systems Task Force (TF) within SMI, issued an open letter to suppliers. The letter contained a message urging active participation in climate change response and specific implementation plans for reducing carbon emissions.
The final part of the event featured awards for outstanding ESG supply chains and sharing of best practices. Thermo Fisher and Merck were selected as outstanding companies this year. Both companies were recognized for their excellent performance in waste emission management, climate change response status, and active cooperation in ESG data surveys. Thermo Fisher and Merck introduced their exemplary ESG activities along with carbon reduction efforts and sustainable management strategies linked with Samsung Biologics.
Yeosin Gu, General Manager of Merck Korea, said, "Through this event, we gained an in-depth understanding of ESG regulatory trends and were able to introduce our sustainable management solutions to other companies, making it a meaningful time. We will continue to closely cooperate with Samsung Biologics and carry on ESG activities for a healthy future for humanity."
John Lim, CEO of Samsung Biologics, stated, "As the chair of the supply chain under the Healthcare Systems Task Force of the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI), we are actively collaborating with global clients and suppliers to address the global challenge of climate change. With a mission to improve human health, we will continuously expand partnerships with suppliers to reduce carbon emissions."
Meanwhile, Samsung Biologics published its second Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) report following last year. The report was created to transparently disclose climate change response directions to stakeholders and contains information on sustainable management performance and climate change response strategies.
