Pakistani Teenage Girl Who Danced with a Boy Killed by Her Biological Father
"1,000 Women Honor-Killed Annually in Pakistan"
A teenage girl in Pakistan was killed by her biological father for filming herself dancing with boys in a social media (SNS) video.
According to Pakistan's daily Dawn and dpa news agency on the 28th (local time), police in the Kohistan region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northwestern Pakistan arrested a man on the previous day on suspicion of killing his own daughter. The man is accused of shooting his 16-17-year-old daughter multiple times at their home on the 24th.
The man reportedly killed his daughter under the directive of the village council after she filmed a video dancing with her peers, including a girlfriend and boys, four days earlier. However, the police stated that the video posted on SNS appears to have been manipulated.
The police are also protecting the peer girlfriend who appeared in the video, as the village council is believed to have ordered her killing as well. Investigations are underway to arrest the village council members who ordered the "honor killing" by the biological father.
Honor killing refers to the practice in South Asian Islamic regions such as Pakistan, where family members like fathers or brothers kill a relative who is deemed to have tarnished the family’s honor based on decisions by the village council. In areas with strict Islamic law, actions such as refusing to marry a designated man or engaging in premarital relations are considered to dishonor the family.
According to the Pakistan Human Rights Commission (HRCP), about 1,000 women fall victim to honor killings annually in Pakistan.
In the Kohistan region where this incident occurred, five girls were innocently killed in 2011 under orders from the village council after watching SNS videos of boys and girls socializing.

To prevent such harmful customs, the government passed a law in 2016 strengthening the punishment for honor killings to "imprisonment of 25 years or more," but the practice has yet to be eradicated.
