Award Ceremony to be Held on the 23rd-24th at the Ministry of Environment Hosted Local Government Carbon Neutralit
Busan City received the highest award, the Minister of Environment Award, in the Ministry of Environment's '2023 Local Government Carbon Neutrality Best Practices' selection review for the 'Institutional Foundation for Carbon Neutrality Awareness and Reduction in the Public Sector and the Spread of Citizen Practice' case.
The city achieved the great feat of receiving the highest award, the Minister of Environment Award, for two consecutive years this year as well, following last year when the selection of local government carbon neutrality best practices was initiated for the first time.
This review was conducted on excellent cases submitted from metropolitan and basic local governments nationwide to discover and spread leading cases of regional carbon neutrality. Among a total of 53 excellent cases from local governments, companies, and city/province carbon neutrality support centers, the awards were decided in order of high scores based on the appropriateness and effectiveness of the projects according to the evaluation criteria and assessment items by category.
In this review, Busan City received high marks for actively promoting regional carbon neutrality by establishing an institutional foundation for carbon neutrality awareness and reduction in the public sector, such as pilot operation of the greenhouse gas reduction awareness budget system, implementation of the pre-evaluation system for policy projects, and expansion of international cooperation including joining GCoM (Global Covenant of Mayors), as well as spreading citizen participation and region-specific carbon neutrality lifestyle practices like the donation forest greenhouse gas reduction contribution certification system and carbon-neutral villages.
Additionally, the Busan City Carbon Neutrality Support Center, established in August last year to support the implementation of regional carbon neutrality, was also highly evaluated for contributing to the spread of regional carbon neutrality implementation through initiatives such as visiting carbon neutrality policy briefings, hosting forums, and creating and operating the carbon neutrality portal website.
The award ceremony is scheduled to be held at the Local Government Carbon Neutrality Conference hosted by the Ministry of Environment in Gyeongju from the 23rd to the 24th.
On that day, Busan City will receive the highest award, the Minister of Environment Award, along with a prize of 1 million KRW, and the Busan City Carbon Neutrality Support Center will receive the Korea Environment Corporation President Award and a prize of 500,000 KRW.
