Gas Stations Evolving into Energy Complex Stations... Electric Vehicle Charging Available at 492 Locations
As the government’s continuous carbon neutrality policies expand the adoption of electric vehicles, traditional gas stations are evolving into 'energy complex stations' that can charge not only internal combustion engine vehicles but also electric and hydrogen vehicles.
According to the Korea Petroleum Management Service on the 22nd, as of the end of October, there are a total of 492 gas stations that also provide electric vehicle charging. This is an increase of 57 stations compared to the end of October last year.
The proportion of operating gas stations equipped with electric vehicle charging increased from 3.9% (435 stations) out of 11,178 stations as of the end of October 2022 to 4.5% (492 stations) out of 11,029 stations as of the end of October this year, a rise of 0.6 percentage points.
By region, the proportion of gas stations with electric vehicle charging is highest in Jeju at 8.2% (16 stations), followed by Seoul at 8.0% (35 stations), and Daejeon at 7.5% (16 stations). Regions with the highest growth rates compared to last year are Jeju with a 2.5 percentage point increase (5 stations), Daejeon with a 2.5 percentage point increase (5 stations), and Chungbuk with a 1.6 percentage point increase (11 stations).
The Korea Petroleum Management Service has been strengthening collaboration to evolve gas stations into complex stations that also provide electric vehicle charging by regularly operating a public-private council this year, composed of the government, petroleum-related associations, and refiners, following the launch of the Gas Station Innovation Forum last year.
