Three MOUs Between Korean and UK Governments to Be Signed
During his state visit to the United Kingdom, President Yoon Suk-yeol is scheduled to announce on the 22nd (local time) that the Royal Society of the UK and Korean researchers will support the creation of world-leading research achievements and the nurturing of future researchers through joint research.
On the morning of the same day, President Yoon will attend the 'Korea-UK Forum on Future Science and Technology with Leading Scientists' held at the Royal Society of the UK, where he is expected to propose strengthening solidarity with the UK as a partner in science and technology cooperation, the presidential office announced on the 21st.
The forum was organized for leading scientists from Korea and the UK to gather at the Royal Society, the world's premier academic research institution, to discuss enhancing research collaboration for world-class innovative research.
During his major overseas visits to countries such as Canada (University of Toronto), Switzerland (ETH Zurich), the United States (MIT), France (Sorbonne University), and Saudi Arabia (King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology), President Yoon has visited top research institutions in each country to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral solidarity based on science and technology.
Founded in 1660, the Royal Society of the UK is one of the world's foremost academic institutions that supports outstanding scientists regardless of nationality, status, or ancien r?gime, widely publicizing new discoveries and achievements.
President Yoon is also expected to reveal specific measures to support Korean and UK scientists. The Korean and UK governments will operate a joint research program worth a total of 4.5 million pounds (approximately 7.3 billion KRW) over three years starting next year, enabling promising researchers in basic research from both countries to form teams and conduct joint research. The program's performance will be reviewed and is planned to be significantly expanded in the future.
The forum will be attended by key members of the Royal Society, including the Duchess of Edinburgh, Royal Society President Adrian Smith, Mark Walport, Jonathan Keating, and Vice President Alison Noble, as well as UK government officials such as the Minister of Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), Korean Royal Society members including Professors Lee Sang-yeop and Kim Bit-nae-ri, and Korean government officials including the Minister of Science and ICT and the Director of the Institute for Basic Science.
Before attending the forum, President Yoon plans to examine major collections of the Royal Society displayed at the venue. These include the Royal Society Charter signed by all members over its 360-year history, the original manuscript of Newton's "Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica," which contains the law of universal gravitation, and historical artifacts such as the portable barometer used by Charles Darwin during his voyage on the HMS Beagle.

Immediately following the event, three MOUs will be signed between the Ministry of Science and ICT and the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. The two countries will formalize a science and technology cooperation agreement to establish governance for scientific collaboration and advance practical cooperation through a science and technology implementation agreement. Additionally, a Korea-UK space cooperation MOU will be signed, laying the foundation for both countries to become future partners in the space economy. Furthermore, a Korea-UK digital partnership agreement is planned to be concluded, promoting shared values among allied countries and creating opportunities for new economic ventures and collaborative crisis preparedness.
