Growing Fear of Reappearing Bindae Bedbugs... How to Respond When Bitten [Kkok! Health]
Excessive Scratching May Cause Secondary Infection
Use Cold Compress and Steroids on Bite Area
Consult Dermatologist if Underlying Conditions Exist
Recently, bedbugs have been appearing across the country, drawing attention to how to respond when bitten by bedbugs.
According to Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital on the 18th, there were only about 20 reports related to bedbugs nationwide over approximately 10 years from 2009 to 2019. However, in just the past month, more than 30 bedbug reports have been made nationwide. It is also known that bedbug reports have been received from more than half of the districts in Seoul.
So, what symptoms appear when bitten by bedbugs? Being bitten by bedbugs does not immediately lead to serious diseases. Initially, the bitten skin becomes red and swollen with itching, and if the itching is severe, it can cause various inconveniences in daily life such as sleep disturbances. In very rare cases, some people may experience anaphylactic shock due to hypersensitivity reactions.
Professor Noh Juyoung of the Department of Dermatology at Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital explained, "There is no need to be overly anxious just because you were bitten by bedbugs," but added, "The itching can be very severe, and excessive scratching due to itching can lead to secondary infections or wounds, so caution is necessary."
Professor Noh continued, "A simple way to relieve the redness, swelling, and itching caused by bedbug bites is to apply a cold compress by wrapping an ice pack in a soft, thin towel and placing it on the bitten area," and advised, "If the itching is severe, applying topical steroids or taking antihistamines under a doctor's recommendation can be helpful."
It is recommended to seek medical treatment if the skin is sensitive or if the patient is a child. Professor Noh emphasized, "Most bedbug bite wounds heal naturally over time," but added, "For children with delicate skin who are sensitive to itching or those with underlying skin conditions, it is best to receive treatment from a dermatology specialist and take care to prevent the wounds from developing into secondary dermatitis or other complications."
Meanwhile, as fear of bedbugs grows, unverified bedbug eradication methods and prevention tips are also spreading. However, the hospital explained that for proper bedbug management, it is best to check guidelines from government agencies such as the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency and seek advice and assistance from doctors.
