Nowon-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will launch the '2024 Hope Ondol Warm Winter Campaign' to secure private funding to support low-income vulnerable groups.
The 'Hope Ondol Warm Winter Campaign' (hereafter referred to as Warm Winter), which the district conducts annually in cooperation with the Community Chest of Korea, is a public-private fundraising movement aimed at spreading a culture of donation and sharing within the community and establishing a social safety net.
This fundraising campaign will run for three months from November 15 to February 14 of next year. The target amount is approximately 3.282 billion KRW (about 835 million KRW in cash and about 2.446 billion KRW in goods). Considering the prolonged economic downturn, the district set the target amount at the 2023 Warm Winter fundraising level.
Individuals, organizations, and companies wishing to donate cash can deposit funds into the Nowon-gu dedicated account (Woori Bank, Community Chest of Korea Seoul Branch) and then submit a cash donation receipt to the relevant department (dong office).
For those who wish to donate goods such as daily necessities or food items, they should submit the donated items along with the purchase receipt and a goods donation receipt to the department (dong office). Contactless cash donations are also possible. Donations can be made easily and conveniently without additional paperwork by scanning the QR code.
To mark the start of the 2024 Warm Winter campaign and encourage voluntary participation from residents, the district held a Love Thermometer unveiling ceremony on the 13th (Monday) in the plaza in front of Lotte Department Store Nowon Branch. The 'Love Thermometer,' measuring 1.5 meters wide and 4.65 meters tall, rises by 1 degree Celsius for every 1% (30 million KRW) of the fundraising goal reached. For promotional purposes, it was installed in two locations: the plaza in front of Lotte Department Store Nowon Branch and the Jungnangcheon Meeting Plaza.
Notably, on this day, the district received the Hope Award at the 10th Love Fruit Awards hosted by the Community Chest of Korea, recognizing its contribution to Love Fruit fundraising and support projects in the citizen participation category. In fact, the district has consistently exceeded its fundraising targets each year, with amounts steadily increasing: approximately 2.7 billion KRW in the 2021 Warm Winter, about 3.2 billion KRW in 2022, and 3.9 billion KRW in the 2023 campaign. The collected cash donations are immediately distributed to those in need for living expenses, medical care, housing, education, and emergency relief, while donated goods are provided to welfare facilities and vulnerable households.
