Five Ulsan City Masters Selected ... Fields Including Cutting Processing, Shipbuilding, and Sheet Metal
Ulsan City has selected five masters of the city for this year.
The city announced on the 15th that the five masters of Ulsan City for this year are ▲ Cutting Processing Kim Jong-gyu (HD Hyundai Heavy Industries) ▲ Shipbuilding Kim Chang-sik (Hyundai Mipo Dockyard) ▲ Sheet Metal & Boiler Making Lee Kyu-dong (HD Hyundai Heavy Industries) ▲ Welding Ha Jin-yong (Hyundai Mipo Dockyard) ▲ Firefighting and Disaster Prevention Kim Sun-woo (HD Hyundai Heavy Industries).
This selection was made through document and on-site evaluations by a panel of judges composed of Korean masters from September 1 to 22, and was finalized at the judging committee meeting on November 10.
The selected masters will receive a technology encouragement fund of 10 million won (2 million won annually for 5 years) and their nameplates will be registered in the ‘Ulsan City Masters Hall of Fame’ located on the 2nd floor of the Workers’ Comprehensive Welfare Center.
Master of Cutting Processing Kim Jong-gyu has worked in the cutting processing field for 38 years since joining HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, significantly contributing to industrial development through process improvements that reduced costs and enhanced quality.
In 2022, he was selected as an excellent skilled technician under the ‘Skilled Technology Promotion Act’ and is also dedicated to transferring technology to small and medium enterprises as a professor in industrial sites in Korea.
Master of Shipbuilding Kim Chang-sik contributed to the advancement of shipbuilding technology by proposing improvements in the shipbuilding sector, winning the company’s Excellent Proposal Award four times, and registering numerous patents, utility models, and designs through continuous self-development and research.
In 2022, he was selected as a New Knowledge Person of Korea and has been leading various talent donation activities utilizing his skills.

He excels in cost reduction and quality improvement and has acquired various national technical certifications such as Sheet Metal & Boiler Making Master and Welding Master through continuous self-development.
He also performs various activities for industrial development and nurturing future talents, including serving as a judge for skills competitions.
Master of Welding Ha Jin-yong joined Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in 1994 and continuously proposed process improvements, receiving the company’s Excellent Employee Award in recognition of his contributions. He has also greatly contributed to industrial development through numerous design registrations.
In 2022, he was selected as an excellent skilled technician under the ‘Skilled Technology Promotion Act’ and as a New Knowledge Person of Korea. He is currently dedicated to nurturing future talents through youth career guidance and Meister high school mentoring.
Master of Firefighting and Disaster Prevention Kim Sun-woo contributes to industrial safety at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries through managing firefighting facilities, conducting firefighting training, and planning fire prevention. He also leads fire prevention efforts in related companies by developing and improving the operation of automated fire detection systems.
He is recognized as a skilled technician who sets an example both inside and outside the company through various volunteer activities.
An official from Ulsan City said, “The masters selected this year are valuable technical talents who have protected the industrial sites of Ulsan, the industrial capital, for over 20 years. We will pay more attention to honoring and supporting technicians so that they can take the lead in regional industrial development and the transfer of skilled technologies with pride.”

The city selects Ulsan City Masters as those who possess the highest skilled technologies and have greatly contributed to the development of local skilled technologies and the improvement of skilled technicians’ status. From 2015 to this year, 38 people in 19 occupations have been selected as Ulsan City Masters.
