Yangcheon-gu Complex Cultural Space 'Dalbitmaeul Chaekswimteo' Opens
Creation of Resident-Friendly 'Book Cafe' in Sinwol 3-dong Small Library with Improved Rest Area Function Amid Low Usage Rates
Includes 32 Reading Seats with 8-Person Tables, Ondol Floor-Style Manga Specialization Space, and Individual Laptop Work Seats
Yangcheon-gu (District Mayor Lee Gi-jae) announced that the small library at Sinwol 3-dong Community Center, which had low usage rates, has been remodeled into a resident-friendly space in the form of a book cafe called ‘Dalbitmaeul Chaekshimter’ and will begin full operation from the 15th.
The existing small library, opened in 2015, had a significantly low usage rate with an average of only about 10 visitors per day. Accordingly, the district has been carrying out environmental improvement construction since August to change the spatial structure and establish a complex cultural space that also functions as a resting area.
Reopened with an area of 132㎡, Dalbitmaeul Chaekshimter has been reborn as a community space exclusively for residents, equipped with a collection of about 4,600 books and 32 reading seats. Actively reflecting opinions that there was a lack of resident communication spaces such as meeting rooms, 8-person tables and seats were arranged, and bright ceiling lights, accent lighting, bright-colored interior design, brick finishes, and furniture were used to add expansiveness and fun to the space.
In addition, individual reading seats in the form of ‘bar tables’ that allow work with laptops, tablet PCs, etc., like a book or study cafe, were also provided, including desks for two people.
Especially, a cozy floor-style reading seat with ondol (underfloor heating) was created in the center, and 1,000 comic books were placed on the shelves to create a comic-specialized space that spans generations.
The existing functions of the small library, such as the interlibrary loan service called ‘Chaekgabang Daechul’ (Book Bag Loan), which allows residents to easily borrow books from other public libraries in the area, are also maintained.
Operating hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, and it is closed on weekends and public holidays. Resting and reading books are available to all residents, but book loans require a Yangcheon-gu Library membership card. However, comic books can only be read on-site.
