[News Terms] Rather Than Quiet Resignation, Prefer a 'Noisy Resignation'
'Loud Quitting' refers to the behavior of employees who, while considering resignation, actively express dissatisfaction with their workplace and tasks. Rather than merely informing others about their intention to resign or actual resignation, they spread criticism and complaints about the company on social networking services (SNS) and other platforms.
'Quiet Quitting' describes a state where employees have mentally checked out from their job without actually resigning, consistently maintaining a passive attitude such as refusing to work overtime without the will to perform well. In contrast, loud quitting differs from quiet quitting in that it assumes resignation as a given and clearly expresses negative opinions and attitudes.
According to the '2023 Global Workplace Report' by Gallup, a U.S.-based public opinion research firm, which surveyed 122,416 workers across more than 160 countries worldwide, about 18% of employees are preparing for loud quitting. Additionally, 59% were identified as quiet quitters. Gallup estimated that quiet quitting and loud quitting are causing a global economic loss of $8.8 trillion, equivalent to 9% of the world's total GDP.
The U.S. economic magazine Forbes analyzed the increase in loud quitters as being due to "the ongoing labor shortage following the COVID-19 pandemic, which has created an atmosphere where finding a new job is relatively easy."
Loud quitting gained widespread attention after Christina Zumbo, a public servant in Australia, posted a video on her TikTok account showing her just before sending her resignation letter via email last September. The video received 53,000 likes and 3,000 comments, spreading the concept widely. In Korea, the term loud quitting is becoming common, with numerous videos appearing simply by searching 'resignation vlog' on YouTube.
