National Mokpo University, Humanities Enthusiasm Heats Up... Lecture by Choi Jin-seok, Emeritus Professor at Sogang University
5-Day Humanities Week Event... Concluding with Choi Jin-seok's Lecture "Why Humanities?"
National Mokpo University (President Song Ha-cheol) announced on the 13th that it successfully concluded a week-long series of various Humanities Week events with the lecture "Why Humanities?" by Professor Emeritus Choi Jin-seok of the Department of Philosophy at Sogang University, held for two hours at 2 p.m. on the 10th at the 70th Anniversary Hall on Dorim Campus.
Professor Choi's lecture was hosted by the Korea Studies Honam Promotion Institute and supported by National Mokpo University in terms of venue and event promotion in connection with the university's Humanities Week schedule.
In this lecture prepared to promote the humanities, Professor Choi engaged with a full house of local city and provincial residents as well as Mokpo University students, explaining what the humanities and the spirit of the humanities are, and where their power lies, receiving great acclaim.

View original imageProfessor Choi began the lecture by saying, "Nothing in this world is eternal." He explained "Why Humanities?" in an easy-to-understand manner through anecdotes about his late mother, an incident of drifting apart from a friend, and the syllogism.
He concluded the lecture by stating, "Solutions to various problems in modern society such as politics and economy are possible through humanistic reflection," and "South Korea must cultivate humanities literacy to advance as a brighter, more developed country."
Born in Sinan and having spent his childhood and adolescence in Hampyeong and Gwangju, Professor Choi is a master of Lao-Zhuang philosophy. Based on deep thought and reflection, he has published numerous humanities books such as "The Tao Te Ching Heard in the Voice of Laozi," which have made a significant impact.
Currently, Professor Choi serves as the chairman of the nonprofit organization "Saemal Saemomjit" and the principal of the "Saemal Saemomjit" Basic School. He can also be found on the YouTube channel "Choi Jin-seok's Saemal Saemomjit." Previously, he appeared on numerous broadcasts and served as the inaugural director of Geonmyeongwon (建明苑).
