A barefoot walking craze is sweeping through Gyeongju, the ancient capital with a thousand years of history. What was once an activity practiced only by so-called naturalists or eccentrics is now spreading not only to neighborhood parks but also to major historic sites.
On the 13th, Gyeongju City introduced, "The 765-meter-long Cheonnyeon Barefoot Trail created in Hwangseong Park has gained nationwide word-of-mouth, attracting continuous visits from tourists and citizens."

View original imageEarlier, from June to September 2021, Gyeongju City invested 120 million KRW to build a 320-meter section of the Cheonnyeon Barefoot Trail, and from May to July this year, an additional 140 million KRW was spent to extend it by 445 meters.
The rumor that one can walk barefoot through a pine forest has made it very popular among Gyeongju residents and tourists alike. Reviews from visitors have been spreading widely through various social media platforms.
A Gyeongju city official proudly stated, "There are many testimonials saying that chronic fatigue disappeared, insomnia improved, blood pressure dropped, or even stroke was cured after walking barefoot. There are also numerous SNS reviews reporting complete recovery from athlete’s foot." Such evaluations of symptom improvement from various ailments are being widely discussed.
As the flow of tourists and citizens continues, Gyeongju City is focusing on providing convenience to users by maintaining foot washing facilities. They also plan to install nighttime landscape lighting by next month to help prevent safety accidents for visitors.
