Yongin City Promotes Ecological Restoration of Hodong 'Gileop Wetland'
Selected for Road Ecological Yard Construction Project
Target Completion in 2026
Ecological restoration projects for the damaged Gil-eop Wetland in Hodong area, Cheoin-gu, Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do are being promoted.
Yongin City announced on the 9th that its 'Gil-eop Wetland Firefly Habitat Creation Project' has been selected for Gyeonggi-do's '2024 Gyeonggi Ecological Yard Creation Project.' With this project selection, the city plans to start ecological restoration from January next year, investing 665 million KRW from the provincial government and 285 million KRW from the city budget. Completion is scheduled for December 2026.

Gil-eop Wetland is a natural wetland located around Gyeongan Stream in Hodong, Cheoin-gu. Through this project, the city intends to restore the original form of the wetland damaged by urbanization and create an environment where various flora and fauna, including fireflies, can inhabit.
The city especially plans to utilize Gil-eop Wetland as an educational site for the importance of wetlands and biodiversity. Additionally, it is expected that the wetland’s key function of water quality improvement will enhance the waterfront space function of Gyeongan Stream.
A city official stated, "We will do our best to create a city where citizens can live comfortably, taking this opportunity to restore Gil-eop Wetland."

Meanwhile, Gyeonggi-do selected four sites for next year's Gyeonggi Ecological Yard Creation Project, including Gil-eop Wetland in Yongin, as well as locations in Suwon-si, Ansan-si, and Gapyeong-gun.
