This Year's Heavy Rain and Typhoon Damage Rice 12,665 Tons... Government to Purchase All if Farmers Wish
This year, the government has decided to purchase all rice affected by frequent rainfall and typhoons, pest damage caused by high temperatures during the harvest season, and pre-germination of rice grains.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced on the 7th that it will proceed with the purchase of damaged rice.
According to an investigation of the damage situation conducted through local governments, the damaged area this year is 3,310 hectares, and the desired purchase quantity is 12,665 tons (based on rough rice). The government plans to purchase the damaged rice separately from the public stockpiled rice and will buy all quantities requested by farmers.
The purchase price for the damaged rice will be determined based on the public stockpiled rice purchase price decided at the end of December, taking into account the milling yield of the damaged rice (the ratio of brown rice obtained after removing the husk from the rice). The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs will first pay an interim settlement amount (25,000 KRW per 40kg) immediately after purchasing the damaged rice, and the remaining amount will be paid by the end of the year once the public stockpiled rice purchase price is finalized.

Jeon Han-young, Director of Food Policy at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, said, "We decided to purchase damaged rice to minimize losses for farmers affected by this year’s frequent rainfall and high temperatures. Since the government will purchase damaged rice in addition to the public stockpiled rice, we expect this to prevent the circulation of low-priced rice and stabilize rice prices."
