Held every autumn since 2017, the paper airplane competition is the largest domestic paper airplane contest where the official champion record of the Korea Paper Airplane Association and the Jinju Mayor's Award are presented. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other factors, the event was held offline for the first time in four years. In preparation for rain, additional measures such as evacuation spaces and individual raincoats were provided, and experience booths using waterproof paper were expanded.
On the day of the competition, under clear skies, participants gathered early from all over the country and competed in three categories: "Longest Flight," "Longest Duration," and "Aerobatic Flight" through preliminary and final rounds. Afterwards, they participated in the "Super Cup," which determines the ultimate champion regardless of age group. This year, elementary school participants drew significant attention with outstanding performances. In addition to the Longest Flight, elementary school champions emerged in both the Longest Duration and Aerobatic Flight categories. The final Super Cup winners were Lee Jong-min (record 50.7m) in Longest Flight for middle, high school, and general divisions; Lee Dong-jae (24.91 seconds) in Longest Duration for the elementary division; and Hwang Chae-kyung (7.75 seconds) in Aerobatic Flight for the elementary division. The Super Cup champions received official champion record certificates from the Korea Paper Airplane Association, medals, and the Jinju Mayor's Award.
The event venue also featured an experience program called the "Paper Lounge Tour Event," utilizing eco-friendly materials such as "paper" and "pulp." This included a 64㎡ giant paper playground called the "Paper Pool," "Pulp Mold Coloring Play" where participants decorated natural raw pulp mold bowls, and paper folding with the popular YouTuber "Nemo Ajusshi." Additionally, 2,000 sheets of "Neofore Straw," an eco-friendly biodegradable paper prepared to make rain-resistant paper airplanes, were used to operate the "Waterproof Paper Airplane Workshop" and the "Paper Airplane Goal Competition."
At the opening ceremony, a demonstration flight was performed by the "Shin Kimchi" team, who are past winners of the Murim Paper Paper Airplane Competition and hold the Guinness World Record for the longest paper airplane flight at 77.134 meters, capturing the audience's attention. Lee Hee-woo, president of the Korea Paper Airplane Association, and Jo Gyu-il, mayor of Jinju, also attended to celebrate the event.
