1 Year and 10 Months Imprisonment... "Too Harsh" Appeal Dismissed
A man in his 30s who habitually inflicted injuries, including indiscriminately assaulting his cohabiting girlfriend over suspicions about her relationship with her ex-boyfriend, was sentenced to prison again in the appellate court.
The Criminal Division 1 of the Chuncheon Branch of the Seoul High Court (Presiding Judge Kim Hyeong-jin) announced on the 5th that it sentenced A (36), who was charged with habitual special injury, to 1 year and 10 months in prison, the same as the original sentence.
A was prosecuted for repeatedly assaulting B (41), who lived with him in his home in Chuncheon City, seven times over four months, causing injuries.
A reportedly committed these crimes because he suspected B was contacting or meeting her ex-boyfriend again. In October of last year, he demanded that B "delete the photos of your ex-boyfriend" and broke her finger by twisting it.
He also assaulted her multiple times with his fists, hit her head with a showerhead in the bathroom, and threatened her to "tell the truth," even slashing her arm with a weapon.
The first trial court stated, "The victim appears to have suffered considerable physical and mental pain due to these crimes, and is expected to endure aftereffects for a significant period," and sentenced him to prison.

A’s side appealed, arguing that the sentence was excessively harsh, but the appeal was dismissed. The appellate court explained, "The reasons cited as unfair sentencing, such as the defendant’s efforts to avoid reoffending by receiving psychological counseling and the fact that the defendant’s detention imposes excessive hardship on his dependents, were sufficiently considered in the original trial."
