UNIST Hosts Symposium on 'Ulsan's Digital Transformation and Future Innovation'
A symposium exploring the future innovation of the industrial city of Ulsan in the era of digital transformation was held at UNIST.
UNIST and the Ulsan Institute (Ulsan Big Data Center) hosted the symposium titled “Digital Transformation and Future Innovation of the Industrial City Ulsan” on the 2nd from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM at UNIST Haedong Hall.
The symposium was organized to share domestic and international industrial innovation cases based on industrial engineering and data science, and to discuss cooperation plans among industry, academia, and research institutes to solve Ulsan’s pressing challenges.
The symposium began with a congratulatory speech by UNIST Vice President Jaeyong Lee, followed by a presentation titled “The Present and Future of Ulsan” by Kyungwoo Lee, Director of the Innovation Growth Research Office at the Ulsan Institute.
In his congratulatory speech, Vice President Jaeyong Lee stated, “UNIST will strive as a research-oriented university leading the 4th Industrial Revolution in Korea and Ulsan, focusing on the industrial application of high value-added technologies, job creation in Ulsan, and generating economic value.”
At the symposium, innovation cases in manufacturing, energy, transportation logistics?key industries of Ulsan?as well as in the medical field, were shared both domestically and internationally.
Professor Jianjun Shi from the Department of Industrial Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, Professor Eunshin Byun from the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Michigan, and Professor Hyojung Kang from the College of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) presented overseas innovation cases in manufacturing, energy, and medical industries, respectively.
Domestic innovation case presentations were given by Jaeyoung Shim, Director of the UNIST Artificial Intelligence Innovation Park Project Group, and Sangjin Kwon, Professor of Industrial Engineering at UNIST.
Director Shim introduced various industrial AI development cases of the UNIST Artificial Intelligence Innovation Park project under the theme “Industrial Artificial Intelligence Innovating Local Communities and Industries.” Professor Kwon presented innovation cases in the transportation logistics industry under the theme “Optimization Decision-Making Research for Improving Ulsan’s Transportation and Logistics Infrastructure.”
Ulsan University and the Ulsan Institute also shared cases and implications for Ulsan’s digital transformation and future innovation.
Jieun Cho, Dean of Academic Affairs at Ulsan University, proposed directions for industry-academia-research cooperation in the Ulsan region through a presentation titled “The Role of Glocal Universities Aiming for Regional Common Goals.” Jaeyoung Park, Director of the Big Data Center at the Ulsan Institute, presented cases of public big data analysis in Ulsan.
An in-depth panel discussion on “Industry-Academia-Research Cooperation Plans for Solving Ulsan’s Problems” was also held. Panelists included Professor Jianjun Shi from Georgia Institute of Technology’s Department of Industrial Engineering, Dean Jieun Cho of Ulsan University, Professor Sangjin Kwon of UNIST’s Department of Industrial Engineering, and Research Fellow Sangrak Kim of the Ulsan Institute.
Officials from UNIST and the Ulsan Institute, who organized the symposium, said, “At this critical time when the status of Ulsan as an industrial capital must be elevated, we have created a forum to discuss solving industrial field problems based on digital technologies such as data science and artificial intelligence,” adding, “We plan to develop this into an annual event to disseminate outcomes.”

The symposium was hosted by UNIST and co-organized by UNIST and the Ulsan Institute. The Ulsan Metropolitan City also participated as a sponsor. Over 80 participants attended the event from Ulsan and other regions, including government agencies, companies, and schools.
