'Hakdong Collapse Disaster' Broker Moon Heung-sik Sentenced to 4 Years in Appeal Trial
Moon Heung-sik (62), former chairman of the May 18th Detained and Injured Association, who acted as a maintenance project broker in the Gwangju Hakdong 4 District redevelopment area where the collapse disaster occurred, was sentenced to imprisonment again in the appellate court.
The 4th Criminal Division of the Gwangju District Court (Presiding Judge Jung Young-ha) on the 1st overturned the original sentence of 4 years and 6 months imprisonment in the appeal trial of Moon, who was indicted for violating the Attorney-at-Law Act, and sentenced him to 4 years imprisonment along with an order to confiscate 521.52 million KRW.
Moon was prosecuted on charges of conspiring with his acquaintance Lee (76) to exert influence to win the contract for the Hakdong 4 District redevelopment maintenance project from September 2015 to September 2019, receiving a total of 1.29 billion KRW from four companies.
The prosecution believes that Moon and Lee together received 590 million KRW, and Moon alone received 700 million KRW from representatives of Hansol Enterprise (general building demolition), Dawon ENC (asbestos removal), and Hyochang Construction (maintenance infrastructure demolition).
