Urgent Arrest of Voice Phishing Cash Collector
Thanks to the quick thinking of a taxi driver who reported the incident using a normal phone conversation to avoid alerting the perpetrator, and the police who took the report seriously, the cash collector of a voice phishing (telephone financial fraud) organization was caught.
On the 31st, the Suwon Western Police Station in Gyeonggi Province is investigating Mr. A, a man in his 40s, who was caught the previous afternoon in a street in Gundo-eup, Anseong City, Gyeonggi Province, after swindling 15 million won in cash from a victim in his 50s. Mr. A is suspected of aiding fraud.
It was confirmed that he pretended to be a financial institution employee and deceived the victim by promising to repay a loan at a low interest rate.
However, Mr. B (55), a taxi driver, became suspicious when Mr. A received two envelopes that appeared to be filled with money from the victim, and reported it to the police, leading to his capture.
Mr. B had picked up Mr. A in Paldal-gu, Suwon City, on a round-trip call and dropped him off on a street in Gundo-eup, Anseong City. While briefly stopped, Mr. B witnessed the act of handing over the envelopes containing money.
While driving Mr. A back to Suwon, Mr. B called 112 and said, "Brother, it’s me, the taxi driver. I hit the jackpot," and the police, recognizing that Mr. B’s call intention was different from a typical report, had him hang up and exchanged text messages with him to plan the operation to arrest Mr. A.
During the text exchanges with the police, Mr. B also conveyed that "the passenger is suspected to be a voice phishing criminal."
The police waited near Suwon Station, where Mr. A was to get off, and arrested him immediately as he exited the taxi, seizing the 15 million won in cash he was carrying.
During the police investigation, Mr. A reportedly stated that he committed the crime after seeing an advertisement for a high-paying part-time job offering 200,000 won per case.
It was confirmed that the victim was unaware of having been targeted by voice phishing until contacted by the police.
