Selection of 4·3 Records for World Heritage Registration Application... Jeju-do "Significant Progress Achieved"
Jeju Island Plans Efforts to Register as a World Heritage Site
Jeju 4·3 records have been finally selected as candidates for UNESCO Memory of the World registration.
Jeju Province and the Jeju 4·3 Peace Foundation announced that the Jeju 4·3 records passed the review by the Korean Committee for Memory of the World on the afternoon of the 23rd and were selected as candidates for registration.
The Korean Committee for Memory of the World had previously conditionally approved the English registration application during the re-examination of the Jeju 4·3 records in August and decided to review the English registration application on this day, resulting in this decision.
Accordingly, Jeju Province plans to collaborate with the Korean Committee for Memory of the World, the Cultural Heritage Administration, and the 4·3 Peace Foundation to finalize the registration application and submit it to the UNESCO Memory of the World Secretariat by November 30.
Thereafter, active efforts will be made to negotiate with the UNESCO Secretariat to ensure that the 4·3 records are registered as a Memory of the World.
Jeju Governor Oh Young-hoon said in a welcoming message on the day, "A precious stepping stone has been laid for 4·3 to advance beyond Korea to become a history and record of the world."
