Osan City Initiates Sediment Dredging Around Osancheon Stream
Secured 280 Million Won in Project Funding
Osan City in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 23rd that it has secured a project budget of 280 million KRW for the dredging of Osancheon, a national river.
The secured budget is allocated to secure the river's cross-sectional flow area by dredging the sediment accumulated in the main stream of Osancheon, aiming to prevent disasters such as river flooding during heavy rainfall in advance.
In the case of Osancheon, the river width near Namchon Bridge (110m) is narrower than upstream (140m), raising concerns about flooding risks during heavy rain. Additionally, due to sediment inflow caused by the development of the Dongtan 2 housing district in Hwaseong upstream of Osancheon, the river width has narrowed and the water depth has decreased, leading to environmental pollution.
Earlier, Mayor Lee Gwon-jae of Osan had requested urgent national funding support for sediment dredging during his visit to Osancheon by the Han River Basin Environmental Office in May.
The mayor stated, "Through swift and proactive dredging projects, we will enhance the flow capacity to prevent flooding and reduce factors causing environmental pollution."
Meanwhile, in May, Mayor Lee also drew attention by actively responding after confirming the occurrence of foul odors near the stone bridge under Geumo Bridge in Eungye-dong.
At that time, the mayor met with Hwaseong Mayor Jeong Myeong-geun to agree on forming a joint water quality improvement investigation team and conducted a pollution source investigation near the Dongtan Water Quality Restoration Center. Currently, Osancheon has recovered to a normal water quality grade of 2 to 3 (slightly good to average grade).
