Hanwha Ocean Draws Attention with Submarine at 'ADEX 2023'
Hanwha Participates as an Integrated Defense Force of Army, Navy, Air Force, and Space
Exhibits Unmanned Command and Control Ship Leading Future Smart Navy
Hanwha Ocean announced that it is participating in the aerospace exhibition SEOUL ADEX 2023, held until the 20th at Seoul Airport in Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi Province, showcasing its technological capabilities as part of Hanwha's integrated defense system.
Hanwha Ocean exhibited its latest combat vessels and future unmanned power command and control ships at this exhibition. These include the Navy's latest vessel, the soon-to-be-ordered Jangbogo 3 Batch-II 3000-ton class medium submarine, and an unmanned power command and control ship designed to realize the Republic of Korea's Smart Navy. This demonstrated Hanwha's confidence in producing advanced technology-based vessels as part of its integrated land, sea, air, and space defense system.
The Jangbogo 3 Batch-II 3000-ton class medium submarine is an upgraded version built by Hanwha Ocean. Compared to the currently commissioned Batch-I vessels, Dosan Ahn Changho and Anmu, it has improved operational performance and submerged endurance through enhancements such as increased length and armament, fuel cell system, horseshoe-shaped sonar, photonic mast attack periscope, diesel engine model changes, and the addition of auxiliary thrusters.
The Jangbogo 3 Batch-II 3000-ton class is a hybrid submarine combining the air-independent propulsion (AIP) system developed by Hanwha Ocean and lithium-ion batteries from Hanwha Aerospace. Hanwha Ocean's submarine is the world's first to apply this propulsion system that combines AIP fuel cells and lithium batteries. With this propulsion system, the Jangbogo 3 Batch-II 3000-ton class submarine boasts the world's longest submerged endurance, excluding nuclear-powered submarines.

Having succeeded in vertical launch system testing as the seventh in the world, it has attracted great interest from several foreign countries considering submarine acquisition. High-ranking officials from the Indonesian Acquisition Directorate, the Philippine Department of Defense Deputy Minister, and defense officials from Canada, Poland, and other countries visited Hanwha Ocean's booth for consultations, continuing active efforts to secure orders.
Additionally, the unmanned power command and control ship (Ghost Commander) also draws attention. This vessel is an effective ship responding to the Republic of Korea Navy's future Smart Navy's manned-unmanned combined combat system (Navy Sea GHOST). It carries and commands various types of unmanned aerial vehicles, unmanned surface vessels, and unmanned submarines to conduct operations at sea.
Recently, Hanwha Ocean, together with the Navy Vessel Technology Department and the Agency for Defense Development, has been carrying out projects to develop the latest combat unmanned underwater vehicles and energy sources, proving that the Ghost Commander is not just a vessel of imagination.
