First Lady Kim Geon-hee, wife of President Yoon Suk-yeol, promised on the 15th, "As the Honorary President of the Korea Cancer Association, I will definitely contribute even a small amount of support."
On the same day, Kim attended the '2023 Pink Festival' held at Yongsan Park in Seoul and said, "We must continuously provide support and love to breast cancer patients and their families," according to Lee Do-woon, spokesperson for the Presidential Office, in a written briefing.
The Pink Festival is an event marking its 23rd year this year, held as part of the Pink Ribbon campaign to raise awareness about the importance of early breast cancer screening and improve public perception of breast cancer. This was Kim’s first medical and disease-related event since being appointed Honorary President of the Korea Cancer Association on the 12th.
At the opening ceremony, Kim mentioned that breast cancer cases increased more than fourfold from 2000 to 2020, saying, "I have a friend who left behind a young daughter and passed away from breast cancer. Breast cancer is threatening us at an extremely frightening speed."
She continued, "We all have the power to change this situation ourselves," urging regular check-ups, regular exercise, healthy eating habits, and improved awareness of breast cancer occurrence and treatment. She especially emphasized sincere encouragement for patients.
