As Daegu City, Uiseong County in Gyeongbuk, and Gumi City are at a stalemate over the location of the cargo terminal during the construction of the TK New Airport, Lee Cheol-woo, Governor of Gyeongbuk, proposed a mediation plan on the 15th to build a civil aviation transport terminal in Gunwi County, Daegu City, and a cargo-only transport terminal in Uiseong County.
Governor Lee Cheol-woo stated on Facebook that “The construction of the new airport, the most important project in the history of Daegu and Gyeongbuk, must be successfully completed to restore former glory and rise as a world-class city. In 2020, Gunwi County insisted that it would not submit an airport bid unless it was the sole area of Ubo, and I explained (to those around me) that even if we endure much criticism for incorporating Gunwi County into Daegu City, we must do it so that future generations can live well.”
He added, “This time, Uiseong County claims that everything favors Gunwi and insists that the cargo terminal should be located where the logistics complex is. In response, Daegu City and Gunwi County strongly reject this, saying that the civil airport has already been promised to be hosted in Gunwi.”
Governor Lee said, “To ensure the successful construction of the new airport under any circumstances, I visited the logistics complex and cargo terminal at Incheon Airport, listened to expert opinions, held discussions on the location of the logistics complex and cargo terminal, and examined the status of cargo terminal establishments at major airports worldwide to devise a plan. I propose separating the cargo-only transport terminal and the civil aviation cargo transport terminal for the Daegu-Gyeongbuk new airport to develop as an economic airport.”
He requested, “I asked for sufficient discussions among the relevant ministries?the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Ministry of National Defense?and the working-level officials of Daegu City, Gunwi County, and Uiseong County. I was concerned that noisy conflicts among TK regions would worsen the economy and delay airport construction, so I have been quietly working on a solution.”

A Gyeongbuk provincial official said, “The plan proposed by Governor Lee is essentially to separate the cargo terminals: cargo loaded on civil aircraft would be handled in Gunwi, and cargo loaded on cargo-only aircraft would be handled in Uiseong. Many aviation experts have responded positively to this plan, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of National Defense are aware of its contents. We understand that Daegu City’s working-level officials are also familiar with the plan.” Attention is focused on what stance Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo will take regarding this plan.
