Kim Jae-wook, the governor of Chilgok-gun, Gyeongbuk, strongly criticized Daegu City's unreasonable discussions on the relocation candidate sites for military units.
At the integrated opening ceremony of the '10th Nakdong River World Peace Cultural Festival' and the '14th Nakdong River Battle Victory Event' held on the 13th, Governor Kim continued to express his candid opinion regarding the military unit relocation promoted by Daegu City.
Kim Jae-wook, the governor of Chilgok County, Gyeongbuk, is stating that discussions about the relocation candidate site for the military unit in Daegu City are being pushed forward unusually.
View original imageSince September last year, Chilgok-gun has been competing to attract military units along with nearby local governments such as Gunwi, Yeongcheon, Sangju, and Uiseong, which are close to Daegu.
Governor Kim said, “Daegu’s military units are not for Daegu City or any specific individual, but the shield of the people protecting the Republic of Korea,” and added, “My conviction is that the relocation of Daegu’s military units, which is directly related to national security and currently under discussion, must not be reduced to a tool for political strife and regional selfishness.”
He continued, “Daegu City has no concrete achievements such as MOUs with the Ministry of National Defense regarding the military unit relocation,” and added, “It is unacceptable to set criteria for such an important project determining national security based on unreasonable reasons, such as linking it to the location of the integrated new airport cargo terminal.”
Governor Kim also urged that solutions for the military unit relocation should be sought from a military perspective rather than regional selfishness or political logic.
He stated, “The relocation of military units should focus on operational efficiency as the top priority and be discussed in a way that can boost the morale of the armed forces,” and added, “Above all, the opinions of related institutions of the Ministry of National Defense with expertise must be given the highest priority,” emphasizing, “Unreasonable discussions about the military unit relocation must stop for the sake of national security. If such irrational discussions continue, Chilgok-gun, the city of patriotic defense, will withdraw voluntarily from the candidate site selection for the military unit relocation, putting its pride on the line.”
