Seongbuk-gu Office Fencing Team's Im Cheol-woo Returns with Gold from Hangzhou
Hangzhou Asian Games Fencing Men's Foil Team South Korea Victory
Im Cheol-woo, a fencer from the Seoul Seongbuk-gu Office fencing team, achieved the remarkable feat of winning a gold medal at the 19th Hangzhou Asian Games.
On the 27th of last month, the men's team foil event in fencing was held at the Electronic University Gymnasium in Hangzhou, China. The South Korean national team, composed of Lee Kwang-hyun, Ha Tae-gyu, Heo Jun, and Im Cheol-woo, won the championship and took home the gold medal.
On that day, our team defeated Taiwan 45-29 in the quarterfinals, then overcame Hong Kong 45-37 in the semifinals to advance to the finals. Facing China as the home team in the final, they overcame the pressure and secured the gold medal with a score of 45-38.
Since its founding in 2003, the Seongbuk-gu Office fencing team has been a representative team of South Korean fencing for 20 years. Seo Sang-won, the pillar and coach of the fencing team, has consistently led the Seongbuk-gu fencing team and nurtured numerous national team athletes. With the construction design by Lee Pil-soon, Senior Vice Chairman of the Seongbuk-gu Sports Promotion Council, a dedicated fencing gymnasium was opened in Jongam-dong, Seongbuk-gu in 2018, enabling more systematic fencing training.
Seung-ro Lee, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu Office, was very pleased to hear the news of the gold medal won by Im Cheol-woo and the national team, and held a congratulatory event on the 6th to celebrate Im Cheol-woo.
