KOSPI Ends Slightly Lower Amid Foreign and Institutional Selling... "Increased Intraday Volatility"
The KOSPI index closed slightly lower as foreigners and institutions recorded net selling dominance.
On the 5th, the KOSPI index closed at 2403.60, down 2.09 points (0.09%) from the previous trading day. This marks the second consecutive day of decline. The index opened at 2423.35, up 17.66 points (0.73%), and rose to an intraday high of 2426.61. However, it turned downward in the latter part of the session, with the 2400 level becoming precarious. Individual investors were the sole net buyers with approximately 318.2 billion KRW, while foreigners and institutions sold about 272 billion KRW and 4.9 billion KRW, respectively.
Among the top market capitalization stocks, Samsung Biologics (4.63%), SK Hynix (4.16%), LG Chem (3.29%), LG Energy Solution (2.52%), Kia (1.95%), and Samsung SDI (0.93%) rose. Samsung Electronics (-1.19%), NAVER (-0.94%), and Hyundai Motor (-0.16%) declined, while POSCO Holdings remained flat. Doosan Robotics, a leading IPO candidate in the second half of the year and expected to achieve 'ttabble' (a fourfold increase from the public offering price), recorded a less impressive performance than expected. Doosan Robotics closed at 51,400 KRW, up 97.69% from the public offering price of 26,000 KRW.
By sector, pharmaceuticals (1.28%), steel & metals (0.31%), transportation & warehousing (0.30%), electrical & electronics (0.21%), and chemicals (0.17%) showed strength, while telecommunications (-2.52%), medical precision (-1.99%), textiles & apparel (-1.88%), and machinery (-1.40%) showed weakness.
The KOSDAQ index closed at 801.02, up 6.38 points (0.79%) from the previous session. Individual investors sold about 180.4 billion KRW, while foreigners and institutions bought approximately 73.9 billion KRW and 100.3 billion KRW, respectively.
Among the top market capitalization stocks, SM Entertainment (3.39%), L&F (2.22%), JYP Ent. (2.01%), HLB (0.33%), and EcoPro (0.12%) rose. POSCO DX (-9.44%), Celltrion Healthcare (-3.28%), Alteogen (-1.07%), Pearl Abyss (-0.78%), and EcoPro BM (-0.64%) declined.
Kim Seok-hwan, a researcher at Mirae Asset Securities, explained, "After starting with gains, the KOSPI and KOSDAQ indices turned downward, increasing intraday volatility. The KOSDAQ index rose over 1% intraday but then turned downward as selling pressure emerged mainly in secondary battery stocks."

Meanwhile, the won-dollar exchange rate closed at 1350.5 KRW, down 13.0 KRW from the previous day.
