Gyeongnam Provincial Council, Youth Mock Assembly... Concludes Amid Students' Enthusiastic Participation
Speaker Election, Ordinance Debate
Experience Legislative Activities Including Electronic Voting
The Gyeongsangnam-do Provincial Council held the final youth mock council session of the year from the 4th to the 5th, targeting students from Seongji Girls' High School and Changwon Sangnam Elementary School in the main assembly hall.
The council's youth mock sessions began in June at Gunbuk Elementary School in Haman and, over a total of five sessions, provided 102 students with opportunities to experience legislative activities.
The students participating in the mock council acted as provincial council members for a day, directly electing the chairperson in the main assembly hall, delivering 5-minute free speeches on various issues of interest such as student health and safety, the global environment and climate crisis, education, and student rights. They also engaged in activities like debating ordinance proposals and electronic voting, gaining hands-on experience to learn about the functions and roles of local councils and the democratic decision-making process.
Especially for students who had limited opportunities for field experience due to COVID-19, the program provided not only the mock council but also experiences such as visiting the legislative promotion center and the main assembly hall, receiving great positive responses from both participating students and teachers.
Students expressed various impressions such as, "I was very grateful and happy to experience the council firsthand," and "Being able to experience each step made it easy to understand the council." Additionally, survey results showed that 95% of participants chose "very satisfied" or "satisfied" regarding the youth mock council, indicating overall high satisfaction among students.
Chairman Kim Jin-bu stated, "Next year, we will prepare a more substantial and solid program so that youth can better understand local councils and reflect on the importance of local autonomy."
