CJ CheilJedang's Toothbrush with 'PHA' Application Wins Main Prize at 'Red Dot Design Award'
Grand Prize Winner in the 'Sustainability' Category of the 'Design Concept' Division
CJ CheilJedang announced on the 27th that it won the main prize at the prestigious German '2023 Red Dot Design Award.'
The awarded product is a toothbrush applying CJ CheilJedang's biodegradable bio-material 'PHA,' co-developed with the eco-friendly product design company 'Libellop.' This toothbrush was highly evaluated for enhancing sustainability by using PHA and industrial biodegradable material PLA instead of petroleum-based plastics, and was selected as the final winner in the 'Sustainability' category of the design concept division.
PHA is a polymer substance accumulated inside microbial cells and is characterized by decomposing in most environments, including soil and marine environments. Only a few companies worldwide, including CJ CheilJedang, can mass-produce it.
The design that enhances hygiene also attracted attention. The toothbrush head is slightly curved inward so that it does not touch the floor and dries well. Because of this, the fact that no separate toothbrush holder or sterilizer is needed was also highly evaluated from a sustainability perspective.

A CJ CheilJedang official said, "Through this award, we expect to raise awareness of the high applicability of PHA and accelerate its commercialization," adding, "We will continue to expand its use into various fields closely related to consumers through active development of material application technologies."
