In particular, this traditional market shopping event holds special significance as it was organized for Gwangyang Steelworks, a pillar of the local economy, to proactively promote the consumption of local marine products in order to alleviate recent concerns about seafood.
On that day, the Gwangyang 5-Day Market was bustling with citizens purchasing groceries needed for various events and outings ahead of the national holiday. The smiles created by visitors preparing for Chuseok filled the market, making the Gwangyang 5-Day Market, the largest traditional market in Gwangyang, full of vitality.
Amid this atmosphere, Lee Cheol-ho, Deputy Director of Gwangyang Steelworks, toured various parts of the market with steelworks employees and participated in shopping activities by purchasing various ceremonial items including seafood and local agricultural specialties such as sweet potatoes.
Additionally, they purchased various types of snacks and treats sold in the market to lead the revitalization of traditional market use, while also listening to the difficulties faced by small business owners and experiencing the real economy firsthand.
At the event, one merchant said, “Due to the recent economic downturn and concerns about seafood, the number of visitors has significantly decreased, but the visit from Gwangyang Steelworks seems to be bringing vitality back to the market,” and added, “We hope that Gwangyang Steelworks will continue to actively support the revitalization of the local economy as a member of the local community.”
Lee Cheol-ho, Deputy Director of Gwangyang Steelworks, stated, “We have proactively engaged in consumption promotion activities to prevent concerns about seafood from causing damage to local small business owners,” and added, “We will continue to show interest and provide support to help resolve the difficulties and hardships of local small business owners.”
