Identification of Remains of Korean War Soldiers Excavated in Pohang, Gyeongbuk Confirmed
Late Sergeant Lee Seong-gyun of the Republic of Korea Army Capital Division
The identity of the remains of a Korean War casualty excavated in Pohang City, Gyeongsangbuk-do, has been confirmed.
The Ministry of National Defense's Remains Excavation and Identification Team announced on the 21st that the identity of the remains excavated in 2005 around Doeumsan Mountain in Pohang City, Gyeongsangbuk-do, was confirmed as the late Corporal Lee Seong-gyun (currently Sergeant) of the Republic of Korea Army Capital Division.
Corporal Lee participated in the Battle of Pohang in 1950 and died at the age of 21 while blocking the southward advance of North Korean forces. Based on the deceased's military records, the team conducted mobile inquiries and last year collected genetic samples from the deceased's nephew to verify the family relationship.

This identification is the 217th since the start of the remains excavation project. On the 20th, the team explained the progress of the excavation to the bereaved family and delivered the identification notification and other documents.
