In particular, last month, odor complaints occurred in densely populated areas such as the Namak and Oryong new town areas, Mokpo, and Yeongam, but no clear cause was found.
The meeting focused on sharing the current status among related departments and discussing measures to reduce odors in the future.
The main causes of odor generation were pointed out as issues with the distribution and use of immature livestock manure compost in rural areas, problems with livestock manure treatment due to aging livestock facilities, and aging waste treatment facilities and negligence in management by disposal companies.
At the meeting, proposed measures to reduce odors included cracking down on the distribution of immature livestock manure compost, operating odor collection vehicles for continuous monitoring, ongoing investment in improving the livestock environment to reduce livestock odors, appointing honorary odor monitors, and establishing a dedicated odor complaint team.
Governor Kim San, who presided over the meeting, stated, "Although the complaints in Namak and Oryong new towns, Mokpo, and Yeongam recently drew significant attention, odor complaints have been a chronic problem undermining the lives of our residents. We will actively reflect the improvement measures proposed today in next year's main budget and respond proactively by preparing improvement plans through cooperation among related departments."
